SCHOOL YARD FARMING:

Everyone needs food to live long and health, everyone should know how to produce their own food from small scale to being commecial farmers

We work with schools and collages to train their students on gardening and farming skills, these skills will help them to manage food security activities in the future as work on supporting the process to help our country return  to its bread busket of Southern Africa status and to make them able to produce their own food.

NHZ Trust  has dedicated itself to creating healthier communities by teaching kids how to grow  their own foord ,nutritious food that goes from their schoolyard to their plate. We do this by building mini-production farms on underused schoolyards that act as outdoor classrooms for the schools we serve.

The Need for Schoolyard Farms

School farms and gardens have proven to offer many benefits including, but not limited to: increased academic achievement; increased positive attitudes towards fruits and vegetables--resulting in healthier eating habits; increased self-esteem; increased sense of community; and access to fresh produce. In a time of vast social and economic inequities, school farms and gardens have the ability to increase students’ health and sense of community, and yet, most schools struggle to find the budget, staff or dedicated volunteers to maintain their garden and use it effectively.

More Than a School Garden

Schoolyard Farms is your typical school garden. We started this project as means to make school gardens self-sustaining, when time-strapped teachers and dedicated parents are unable to manage a full-time, labor-intensive project in perpetuity. Schoolyard Farms is the only project by NHZ  scaling-up a school garden to a school farm and growing food on a production level so it can be sold to the community, generating revenue to sustain the farm.

This model not only sustains the school farm, it generates urban farm jobs, feeds the community, and acts as an outdoor classroom and can be replicated at other schools. The support of Schoolyard Farms means the support of a healthier, more equitable food-system and a healthier, more equitable Zimbabwe.

In addition to farming underutilized schoolyards, Schoolyard Farms provides weekly garden-based lessons related to farming, health, nutrition and life science to all the students at the schools we serve. We also host a farm-based summer camp where children learn healthy living habits by learning where their food comes from and how to grow it and cook it through games, crafts, cooking lessons and more

Schoolyard Farms Camps

Camp kicks off every school holiday , children will experience a week-in-the-life of an urban production farm while exploring the schoolyard, performing farm tasks, preparing healthy snacks, and participating in farm arts and crafts activities, scientific inquiry, and active play. Outdoors all day!

By supporting Farm Camp you help us achieve our mission of  creating sustainable food security for our nation ,increasing the health of our community by teaching kids how to grow nutritious food that goes from their schoolyard to their plate.

We ask that camper cell phones remain in camper backpacks during camp, and all other toys and electronic devices remain at home.
